Case Study

Reimagining Meta AI Glasses Onboarding

Context

Meta Reality Labs is the division of Meta focused on building wearables and the underlying software platforms. It represents Meta's long-term bet on the next major computing platforms.

Description

Onboarding for Meta AI glasses has faced persistent friction: pairing errors, drop-off during lengthy updates, low app connection success, and a lackluster first impression. Alan Dye's arrival also marks a strategic shift toward positioning the glasses as a fashion-forward device. In response, the other onboarding design leads and I developed a north star proposal to address these issues.

Information gathering

Unconstrained Ideal

Ideally onboarding provides a strong first impression, feels effortless, and educates users on essential features.

Self-Audit

Every idle second is a drop-off risk

Users are constantly waiting with no action to perform.

Lackluster first impression

The initial impression does not match the $300+ price tag

App connections are last.

App connections drive retention. Yet they are last in onboarding.

Development

Updates

Strong first impression

The experience should feel premium.

AI troubleshooting

Remove endless troubleshooting flows. Instead, tell Ai informally what is wrong and let it direct users accordingly

Connect Apps during update

Provide users with meaningful actions to perform while waiting on updates.
